Football Goal Size by Age — UEFA Pathway from Mini to 11-a-Side

A coach’s guide to the UEFA grassroots pathway: which goal size to use at U7 mini-football, U10 5-a-side, U12 7-a-side, U14 9-a-side, and U16+ 11-a-side. National FA variations for England, Germany, France, Netherlands, Spain, and Italy. Plus a US Youth Soccer comparison for dual-format clubs.

Short answer: UEFA grassroots formats progress from mini-football (U7-U8) through 5-a-side, 7-a-side, 9-a-side, to full 11-a-side. Standard goal sizes are 3×2m for 5-a-side, 5×2m for 7-a-side, 6×2m for 9-a-side, and the regulation 7.32×2.44m for 11-a-side. Each national FA in Europe applies these with minor variations.

The UEFA Grassroots Development Framework

UEFA’s Grassroots Charter sets a progression of game formats designed to match the physical and technical development of young players. The principle: smaller pitches and smaller goals at younger ages give every player more touches, more decisions per minute, more opportunities to score, and less time chasing the game without involvement.

Format UEFA-recommended age Goal size Pitch size Players per side
Mini-football 4v4 U6-U8 1.2×0.8m or 2×1m 25-30 × 15-18m 4 + GK
5-a-side U8-U10 3 × 2m 30-35 × 20-22m 5 + GK
7-a-side U10-U12 5 × 2m 50-55 × 30-35m 7 + GK
9-a-side U12-U14 6 × 2m 70-75 × 50-55m 9 + GK
11-a-side (full) U14+ 7.32 × 2.44m 90-120 × 45-90m 11 + GK

National FA Variations

The UEFA pathway is a starting point; each national FA adapts it for local development philosophy.

England — The FA Youth Development Phase

  • U7-U8: 5v5 with 3×2m goals (not 4v4 mini)
  • U9-U10: 7v7 with 5×2m goals
  • U11-U12: 9v9 with 6×2m goals
  • U13+: 11v11 with regulation 7.32×2.44m goals

The FA’s rationale is to slow the format progression and emphasise small-sided football longer to improve technical development.

Germany — DFB Kinderfußball

DFB’s Kinderfußball reforms (effective from 2024):

  • U6-U7: Fun-football (3v3, 4v4 with very small or no goals)
  • U8-U9: 5v5 with 3×2m goals
  • U10-U11: 7v7 with 5×2m goals
  • U12-U13: 9v9 with 6×2m goals
  • U14+: 11v11 regulation

DFB emphasises rotating goalkeeper positions in younger age groups.

France — FFF École de football

  • U6-U7: Mini (2v2 or 3v3)
  • U8-U9: Foot à 5 (5v5, 3×2m goals)
  • U10-U11: Foot à 8 (8v8, 5×2m or 6×2m goals)
  • U12-U13: Foot à 11 transition format
  • U14+: Foot à 11 regulation

FFF uniquely uses 8v8 rather than 7v7 or 9v9 at the U10-U11 stage.

Netherlands — KNVB Pupillenvoetbal

  • U6-U8: 4v4 with 1.5×1m mini-goals
  • U9-U10: 6v6 with 3×2m goals
  • U11-U12: 8v8 with 5×2m goals
  • U13+: 11v11 regulation

The Dutch use 6v6 and 8v8 as intermediate formats with scaled pitch sizes.

Spain — RFEF Cantera and Fútbol Sala

Spain runs a higher proportion of grassroots development as fútbol sala (futsal):

  • Fútbol sala (indoor): 5v5 with 3×2m goals
  • Fútbol 7 (outdoor mid-format): 7v7 with 5×2m goals
  • Fútbol 11 (full outdoor): 11v11 with regulation goals

Italy — FIGC Scuole Calcio

  • U7-U8: 5v5 with 3×2m goals
  • U9-U10: 7v7 with 5×2m or 6×2m goals
  • U11-U12: 9v9 with 6×2m goals
  • U13+: 11v11 regulation

Why Goal Size Matters at Each Age

Mismatched goal size at youth ages is one of the most underrated factors in player development:

Goals too big for young players. A U8 trying to defend a 7.32×2.44m goal can’t physically cover even a quarter of the goal mouth. Goalkeepers lose confidence; outfield players learn that long shots score easily, hurting the development of build-up play. The game becomes a goal-kick / clearance / lob race.

Goals too small for older players. A U14 playing into a 5×2m goal can’t practice realistic shooting form — the goal is so small that any decent shot scores, removing the need for placement, swerve, or technique.

The right size at the right age. UEFA-aligned sizing produces a roughly 65-75% "save-able" ratio at each age: the goalkeeper can plausibly save most well-struck shots but not every one. Outfield players need to make real decisions about shot selection, placement, and timing.

The Practical Three-Goal Kit

For a multi-age grassroots club running U7-U15, three goal sizes cover most needs:

  1. 5 × 2m — covers 5-a-side (U8-U10) and 7-a-side (U10-U12). The workhorse size; most clubs need 4-8 of these.

  2. 6 × 2m — covers 9-a-side (U12-U14). Most clubs need 2-4. Optional if your club doesn’t run 9-a-side.

  3. 7.32 × 2.44m (full regulation) — covers 11-a-side from U13/U14 onwards. Most clubs need 2 (one per pitch end). Often provided by the council / pitch owner as permanent goals.

For mini-football (U6-U8), clubs typically use cones or pop-up goals rather than full inflatable structures.

US Youth Soccer Comparison — For Dual-Format Clubs

For international schools in EU using US Youth Soccer formats, ex-pat coaching, or EU clubs hosting US tournaments:

US Youth Soccer Age US goal size Equivalent UEFA format UEFA goal size
4v4 U6-U8 4 × 6 ft (1.2 × 1.8m) Mini-football 1.2×0.8m or 2×1m
6v6 U8 4 × 6 ft or 6.5 × 18.5 ft 5-a-side 3 × 2m
7v7 U10 6.5 × 18.5 ft (~2 × 5.6m) 7-a-side 5 × 2m
9v9 U12 6.5 × 18.5 ft or 7 × 21 ft 9-a-side 6 × 2m
11v11 U14+ 8 × 24 ft (regulation) 11-a-side 7.32 × 2.44m (regulation)

The 11-a-side regulation size is identical (US 8×24 ft = UEFA 7.32×2.44m). The youth formats diverge meaningfully — US Youth Soccer uses 6.5×18.5 ft (~2×5.6m) as a standard youth size, which is wider but shorter than the UEFA 5×2m equivalent.

For inflatable goals, manufacturers often produce both 5×2m (UEFA spec) and 6.5×18.5 ft (US youth spec) as separate SKUs. Verify before purchase that you’re buying the right format for your league’s requirements.

Storage and Setup at the Right Size

  • 3×2m and 5×2m portable goals are roughly suitcase-sized when deflated. Single-person carry.
  • 6×2m portable goals are noticeably larger when deflated — large duffel bag.
  • 7.32×2.44m (full regulation) portable goals are substantial — two large duffel bags. Two-person carry recommended.

For 11v11 use, fixed metal-frame regulation goals at the home pitch combined with portable 5×2m and 6×2m goals for training and youth matches is the configuration most multi-age clubs converge on.
